End of Summer to mid fall
Over here at ABA, we have been so busy, we haven’t updated our building log in months. It’s supposed to be the intern’s job, but here I am updating our hordes of fans to the status of our projects. Hey I’m not complaining, being busy is the best!
This summer was spent working a lot on one of our favorite projects, and ADU, with an addition and renovation to the existing home. In case you forgot, an ADU is an Additional Dwelling Unit, and they are a popular way to create urban density, affordable rents, and a property that is income positive. Also they are super fun to design.
This project is a 600 sf ADU that is built on top of a (2) car garage. The garage is brick, to reflect the existing Queen Anne home, and the ADU above is in a modern style with a low slope roof, and lots of windows.
The addition created a sunroom for the existing home, as the client is from California, and just can’t get enough of that golden glow. We popped a door in the existing bathroom upstairs, and now the client can use the sunroom roof as a deck, complete with hot tub! This led to a renovation of the bathroom, which turned out really swell. Moving through the house, we added lights, (cause those early 1900’s houses are often a little dark) outlets, built in closets, everything needed to bring a beautiful classic house up to date.
The front elevation of the house might be my favorite, and most unexpected touch. We knocked out the front wall, and added HUGE windows, and grand front door (42” x 96”) ! We think this draws a connection from the classic victorian architecture to the modern addition and ADU.
I’d love to hear what you think!

May has been a busy month for Astorino Building Arts! We are finalizing permits for an ADU (additional dwelling units) with the City, design development for an artists retreat, and a full gut and renovation of a mid century ranch house in Denver’s landmark highlands neighborhood.
Additional dwelling units are popular in Denver, and across the country. A wonderful way to make your -to-return work for you, contribute to affordable housing, and urban density. Additional dwelling units are zone dependent, but if your lot allows one, an ADU can be a great addition to your property. Give us a call and we are happy to talk about your property allowances anytime!
