artist retreat

a sculptor and installation artist contacted ABA to design a studio/ living quarters for her property in rural wyoming. the site had wonderful views, but also extreme winds. we located the property to turn a shoulder to the wind, and open up to the views. tall south facing windows warm the concrete slab, while thick metal clad walls keep the wind and cold out.

Site specific design

Orienting the building to the site really makes this project special. Predominant winds come from the east, and views of Mt Laramie are to the north east.

Floor plan

Simply austere, the artist wanted a no frills getaway, a meditation in architecture. This floor plan is nothing but flexible creative space, framed views, and pauses for reflection
